An audit of drug utilization patterns, rationality, and cost analysis of antimicrobial medicines in a tertiary care teaching hospital in central suburban India

Background: Antimicrobial medicine (AMM) utilization patterns and rational drug use are important topics in today’s world wrought with AMM resistance, irrational prescription of antibiotics, lack proper training such as stewardship programmes for medical graduates general practitioners. Our objective was to perform an audit the antimicrobial pattern, evaluate rationality use, a cost analysis these drugs.Methods: An observational cross-sectional study design implemented. The location tertiary care teaching hospital suburban central India. Patients were recruited from surgery departments.Results: Out 189 patients, average age 45.714 years 67.725% females. A total 595 AMMs prescribed patients 3.148±1.578 drugs per patient. 6.5% generic, 95% included national essential list, 90% patients’ prescriptions rational. expenditure on ₹726043.610, median ₹987.320.Conclusions: Drug vary between departments. They also different institutions within same country. Creating structured standardized program uniformly train healthcare professionals conservative antibiotic practices is needed. This hopefully paves way future studies target critical areas prospectively assess impact patterns.
